the excellent sandbox, swimming, survival tube-architect game Subnautica, is now playable in multiplayer thanks to a new mod called Nitrox. Though calling it playable is a bit of a rosy look as per the creators “Sunrunner” own words it’s still in “very early stages of development”.
I would agree with that statement quite a bit. But the skeleton for a co-op play-through is there: it has synced player movement, most basic animations, base building and item dropping, as well as a very basic chat system.
Because it’s so early, Sunrunner isn’t recommending it for “casual play”. Though if you don’t want to wait for polish you can download the installer from its Nexus mods page (you’ll have to login to your Nexus account first as per usual). Players aren’t too scared from that caveat it seems as it has been downloaded more than 35,000 times since it was added to Nexus Mods.
It’s open-source as those things are wont to be, meaning other modders will be able to iterate on it in future. The Unknown Worlds Entertainment Team even commented on the mod last year, saying they fully support the project.
Obviously the developers would be insane to NOT support a mod that creates much more longevity for their title without their need to build it. We can only hope they take its work as inspiration or even provide direct assistance to get the option integrated into the base game.
