I used to love dwarf fortress, but never could get used to the control scheme. This game has the foundations for the same scope and scale, but it’s not there yet.
But what is here is a solid foundation, the core loop for the building, expanding, relationships and the foundation for the various aspects of progression, i like the entire scale and way trading works and the way crafting expands the abilities and scope of the game.
Sadly the assets and abilities are not there yet, and it needs massive expansion – but the base assets are great and core gameplay is VERY well put together.
currently a very solid gameplay experience, but gaps in both story and world are readily apparent, and are logical instead of abrupt. Clear places where content is waiting for the developers to add and the modding community to expand.
I personally am not a fan of the sound design and assets, as i feel they are very sub-par in conveying information. The UI and general Graphics also need a ton of work, between displaying alerts and positions (especially on higher resolutions) and character animations.
Where i am a fan of is the enticing pull of one more try when your colony dies of starvation and when you get eaten by a mystic horse or when you get killed by raiders or when….
but… I still restarted my next colony after starvation killed my previous and i already cannibalized half my people and had them eat their loved ones…. and that is pretty damn good for a little indie game just hitting Early access.
tl;dr : the foundations are solid
