First things first: Visually this game is pretty damn great. Everything ties in nicely and fits the theme from A to Z. While I’m not a fan of the music, that mostly boils to it being repetitive and having no volume control.
Which is also my second biggest gripe: There is a absolute lack of any option in the game. No resolution, no windowed mode, not even a damn volume slider. REALLY needs improvement.
BUT, my biggest grips with the game is an absolute lack of content. Currently there is about ~3 hours of content in the game… with zero deviation. I feel it needs serious time in the oven still before being pushed to players, because right now, halfway getting into the grove of the game (even with the Early access moniker) i was met with a “THANKS FOR PLAYING” screen.
So, the while game play is pretty nice overall through with the various well written and funny random events and encounters, as well as various management mechanics (while limited). The combat is still the weakest part, but i feel reworking the balance / card-system would solve most of the problems there. But other then that i feel massive parts of the game are missing, even excluding what the Early Access page already points out, a proper inventory management system or even a way to buy armor is not available making the experience not only limited but also frustrating.
Trading is currently impossible because of hull sizes limiting what you can bring (mostly food… fills it up) and prices for various goods having no way to keep track of anything…. and no other ships being in the same OR free form travel being in the game for actual trading.
Outside of all of this, I need to come back to the lack of content, even the random encounters suffer here with the same encounter often playing within minutes of each other.
Whole a solid start from all aspects, but i feel the game needs more time before it’s worth picking up. The lack of content, and basically every system being under developed, if developed at all… even when you consider it’s early access.
The Great whale road is a good start for something that might end up great… if given the time it needs in the oven, because as of right now, it’s not worth picking up.
