Blade and bones combines a wonderful world with a unique layout and non-linear progression with sword based combat…
Sadly – it doesn’t do so with any great competence.
The game-world is unique and cool, with a well built lore and a well designed cohesion with allowances to traverse, find and look for your own way around, discern secrets and figure out tidbits.
Sadly, the game looks very outdated and performs quite poorly. the graphics, effects and animations all feel a decade out of place, and from a technical side the game frequently clips into terrain and has some of the poorest collision detection I’ve encountered in ages. It’s a chore to keep finding a secret step of stairs, only to then need to be a master at a game of “avoid the secret walls” to get up them.
Animations go this way as well, with the combat animations quite passable, most others are sub-par, with both death animations and the vast majority of bosses feeling extremely stilted. Not to mention the various trash mobs all over that are a mockery on the world they inhibit.
Combat is a fairly simple afair, for all their styles and swords it boils down to the weakness of the Ai and not any skill required from the player. the system itself does not have any depth beyond light and heavy attacks. A real shame compared to other games that try similar things.
Coupled with the 5-10 hours of playtime and various other graphical and gameplay issues I can not recommend this title.
This is a great idea with a cool concept… executed quite poorly.
