Maize is a unique narrative experience with some very cool and well put to together twists in storytelling and narrative.
Maize goes all in on the narrative experience, with excellent pacing and storytelling. Including very competent voice talent and writing. So from a story perspective, this is a amazingly well put together title.
Sadly, that’s where all the games strengths lie – Mechanically, it’s a very simple puzzle game with minimal problem solving, mostly reduced to “try stuff in your inventory”. This is not as good, but is well paced with each scene begin quite unique and each part of the game, even if mechanically simple still a great narrative gameplay experience.
The game also takes quite a few bonus points for excellent animation quality for everything from cut-scenes to sentient corn, but then loses those points again due to the extremely “dead” environments with almost no animation, life or ambiance. This is especially notable when you are in the various open-air areas and feel like you are still in tunnels.
Now, my last criticism is the replayability and duration… the entire game took me 3.5 hours to complete.
with a price tag of $20 and gameplay to last 3-4 hours… thats a hard purchase to recommend, but that is up to everyone to weight in on for themselves
