This isn’t a bad game, but it has enough flaws and problems that make sure its also not an excellent one.
As expected the varied mix in quality is the biggest flaw of the title, and this is evident in all locations and mechanics throughout the game, like the developers decided to focus on a few core mechanics, cut-scenes and goals and tried to bridge the rest as half an afterthought and half a desperate attempt to catch up.
The best examples I have of this are Animations and textures. While the animations for character movement, combat and interactions that are central to the game are excellent, other animations (such as facial ones in cut-scenes) look very dated by comparison. the VO Work of the main cast is competent, if not amazing – but the VO work for random areas of the game like radio chatter and the like sounds like a group of 8th graders pretending to be ” IGOR THE DESTROYER, Comrade.”
This again, is not a “Good/Bad” – every part of this game has excellence and mediocrity in spades, nothing is ever truly terrible, but compared to where it shines, the mediocre stands out even more. Neither is it saying that a specific mechanic is truly bad… its always “parts of it”. Part of the gun-play is great (sniping), part is meh (pistols), part of the world is amazing (artstyle and setting) part is meh (grass textures for example).
Part of the AI is great (responsive on high difficulty) part is terrible (Triangulation Ai, ever heard of it?).
As i mention in the video, the game takes two steps forward, and one step back – making sure that the game is never bad, but also keeping it away from great. Flawed with excellent parts is the best way i can sum it up.
So overall a tough sell at the full price, but also not one to ignore completely.
