This is pretty damn good tactical gameplay. From top to bottom that’s what the game offers. If you are into turn based tactics and sci-fi? then look no further than to try this game. It’s good.
But its not perfect.
First, the technical side of things the game is lacking a proper full-screen mode, and its video options are woefully inadequate. While performance is fine, its not stellar.
Visually, the game is okay – if you were intrigued by the tactics or turn based strategy, this isn’t the end of the world – its not a focus of the game, but visually.. it did let me down. Both in visual fidelity, but also in overall fluff. Explosions were… ok, not great. ship detail is … ok, but not great. Quality of the maps is … adequate, but not great.
So you might think this a bit of a lackluster game then, reading that – but that’s far from the truth. because the meat of the game is in the depth and complexity and sheer tactical capabilities of the combat encounters. With various ships costing different number of army points, requiring smart compositions being the very first bit of the entire layer upon layer of tactical power.
From the way ship movement (and hull strength) works, to the way you can position ships in (somewhat) 3d Space and the way turrets, attach squadrons and everything else works – it creates a methodical, but fast paced (due to timed turn limits in multiplayer) way of having a fantastic battlestar chess… that has explosions everywhere.
Not a perfect game for sure – but one that’s damn enjoyable and worth looking into if you like tactics and turn based strategy.
